I have always loved houses. As far back as I can remember, my brother and I were trying to outdo
each other with increasingly elaborate dream house sketches. It wasn't until high school, however,
when a personality profile test labeled me “the architect” that I began to take architecture seriously
as a potential career.
I enrolled in every architecture course offered at Williams College and as a senior, won the school's
prize in architecture. I compiled album after album of house pictures from magazines and from
frequent photographing excursions all over the country. I soon became a danger behind the wheel
because I was constantly peering over hedges and down driveways, seeking inspiration rather than
watching the road ahead of me. For graduate school, I selected the University of Virginia School of
Architecture because of all the schools, I felt its curriculum was best suited to an aspiring
residential architect. UVA taught me to move beyond my focus on style and to design buildings that
seek a profound connection with the man-made and natural landscape.
In the decade that I've worked professionally as an architect, I have come to appreciate the real-
world skills required to turn an idea into an actual building. My employers, Austin Patterson Disston
Architects and Trumbull Architects are both well-published firms that specialize in single-family
residential design. Both are small offices with generous mentors who gave me constant firsthand
experience of every stage of the architectural process from the first client meeting to the final
building walkthrough. In all, I created detailed drawing sets for more than thirty residential projects.
Having completed several projects as principal of my own firm, I love houses now more than ever
before. There is no better feeling than helping clients put their dream house ideas on paper and
then helping to navigate them through the complex process of making that vision a reality. As a
small, young firm, every project is important to me and receives my personal attention at every
stage. It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome projects, no matter how large or small, in all fifty
states.
